“Fully equipped kitchen” is the most common promise on hotel and apartment websites. We read the own websites of 944 hotels and apartments we list: 402 of them use the phrase. Then we compared the claim with the appliances each one actually has, confirmed from its own pages and photos. The phrase turns out to say very little.
“Fully equipped” has no standard meaning. In practice it means a stove or hob, a fridge, a microwave, and pots, pans and crockery. It does not reliably mean an oven or a dishwasher: stays that use the phrase have them no more often than stays that don't, and 30% of them are kitchenettes.
| Confirmed appliance | Says “fully equipped” | Doesn't say it |
|---|---|---|
| Stove or hob | 93% | – |
| Fridge | 93% | – |
| Oven | 49% | 47% |
| Dishwasher | 55% | 59% |
| All four | 37% | – |
Only about half of the “fully equipped” kitchens have a confirmed oven or dishwasher, the same as kitchens described any other way. The phrase is not a signal of a better kitchen. Citadines Toison d'Or in Brussels, Ascott Sentral in Kuala Lumpur and Oasis Hotel Waikiki in Honolulu, for example, all call their kitchens fully equipped, and none of them has an oven.
The share of the 402 websites that mention each item anywhere on the pages we read. Cookware and the fridge come first; the oven is near the bottom, below the coffee machine.
121 of the 402 (30%) are kitchenettes by our definition: a compact kitchen, usually with a small fridge and a one- or two-ring hob. For these hotels, “fully equipped” describes the plates, glasses and utensils, not the size of the kitchen. See full kitchen vs kitchenette for what each usually includes.
If you want to cook proper meals, these are the things to look for in the photos or ask about:
We don't take “fully equipped” at face value. For each of the 1,109 stays we list, we record the stove, oven, fridge and dishwasher separately, from the property's own website and photos. Today we have a confirmed oven for 541 stays and a confirmed dishwasher for 617. Each stay card shows a tick for a confirmed appliance and a question mark where we couldn't confirm it either way, and the filters on each city page show only the stays that have what you need. For the cities and chains most likely to have each appliance, see hotels with a dishwasher, oven or stove.
About the study: the 944 stays are those we list whose own website we have read (as of 14 October 2026). “Says fully equipped” means the phrase “fully equipped kitchen” (or “fully-equipped”, with up to two words between) appears on those pages. “Confirmed” means the property's own website or photos show the appliance; not confirmed is not the same as missing.
There is no standard. In our study of 402 hotels and apartments that use the phrase, almost all had a stove and a fridge (93%), but only 49% had a confirmed oven and 55% a dishwasher, and 30% were kitchenettes. Expect a hob, a fridge, a microwave and basic cookware; check for anything more.
Often not. Only 49% of the stays that describe their kitchen as fully equipped have a confirmed oven, about the same as stays that don't use the phrase (47%). Only 30% mention an oven anywhere on their website.
About half the time: 55% of the stays using the phrase have a confirmed dishwasher, slightly fewer than stays that don't (59%).
Yes, and it is common: 30% of the stays in our study that call their kitchen fully equipped are kitchenettes. "Fully equipped" usually describes the utensils and crockery, not the size of the kitchen.
