Aparthotel, serviced apartment, extended-stay hotel: all three promise a kitchen and more room than a hotel, and booking sites use the words loosely. We list 1,109 stays with kitchens and record the type of each, so we can compare them on what matters to someone who cooks: the kitchen, the appliances, the food shops nearby and what guests think.
Shares of the stays of each type. Appliances count when the property's own website or photos show them. “Fresh food” is a market, greengrocer, butcher or fishmonger within 500 m, among stays with a mapped location.

An aparthotel is a hotel whose rooms are apartments or studios: there is a reception, regular cleaning and often a gym or a laundry room, but you get your own kitchen. It is the most common type we list (488 stays), and 60% of them are in Europe. Kitchens vary most here: 53% are full kitchens, the rest kitchenettes, and we confirmed an oven in 43%. They are usually in city centres, and 61% have fresh food within 500 m. Chains include Citadines, Adagio, Staycity, Locke and Numa.
Choose one if you want hotel services and a central location, and a kitchenette is enough, or you check that the unit has a full kitchen.
A serviced apartment is closer to a home: a full apartment in a managed building, often with a separate bedroom and living room, cleaned less often than a hotel room. In our data it has the best-equipped kitchens: 76% are full kitchens and 51% have a confirmed stove, oven, fridge and dishwasher. It also has the best Google rating of the three, 4.49 out of 5.
Choose one if you stay a week or more, cook most meals, or travel as a family and want space.
Extended-stay hotels are a North American format (92% of the ones we list are in the US or Canada): Residence Inn, Homewood Suites, TownePlace Suites, Hyatt House, Staybridge Suites and others. Nearly all have a full kitchen (93%) and a dishwasher (92%), but ovens are less common (39% confirmed): many suites have a two-burner cooktop and a microwave instead. Most are built around the car, and only 20% have fresh food within 500 m.
Choose one if you are in the US for work or a long visit, will drive to a supermarket, and want a predictable kitchen in every suite.
The label tells you less than the appliance list. Check the stove, oven and dishwasher on the stay's card, and how far the nearest market is. More on that in full kitchen vs kitchenette, fresh food near your stay and the best US cities for full kitchens.
An aparthotel is a hotel building made of apartments, with a reception and hotel services; a serviced apartment is usually an apartment in a residential-style building, managed for short and long stays, with more space and less service. In our listings, 76% of serviced apartments have a full kitchen against 53% of aparthotels.
